Eggers and colleagues followed children in the PROGRESS birth cohort in Mexico City. Maternal blood lead in the second and third trimesters was tested against shotgun metagenomes of stool at ages 9 to 11.
Key numbers
The WikiBiome corpus note states 123 children. Second-trimester maternal blood lead had a mean of 33.6 µg/L, and third-trimester lead had a mean of 34.9 µg/L. Weighted quantile sum regression showed a negative overall mixture effect (beta = -0.17) for both trimesters. Bacteroides caccae was lower with lead exposure. Alpha and beta diversity associations were slightly negative and not statistically significant. Third-trimester lead was associated with beta diversity R squared = 1.1 percent (p = 0.066).
Evidence fitness
The record supports a prospective association between prenatal blood lead and childhood stool metagenomes. It does not support a concentration of lead in any food, and it does not state a limit.
Limitations
This page records the WikiBiome corpus note. It is not a new extraction from a local copy of the paper. The exposure is maternal blood lead, not a food sample.
