Richardson and colleagues gavaged Sprague-Dawley rats for 5 days with sodium arsenite, cadmium chloride, sodium dichromate, cobalt chloride, or nickel chloride. The WikiBiome corpus note states that arsenic, cadmium, and nickel each showed dose-dependent effects on microbiota composition, and that nickel affected the most genera.
Key numbers
The note states 5 rats per cohort. Observed OTUs and Shannon diversity were lower for arsenic, chromium, and nickel (p < 0.05). Differential abundance covered 47 genera: nickel 37, arsenic 17, cadmium 5, chromium 10, and cobalt 1. Iron-complex transport genes were overrepresented after arsenic and nickel treatment. The note does not print the milligram doses.
Evidence fitness
The record supports a short rat gavage comparison of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and cobalt with gut microbiota. It does not support a concentration of any of those metals in food, and it does not state a limit.
Limitations
This page records the WikiBiome corpus note. It is not a new extraction from a local copy of the paper. Sodium dichromate is a hexavalent chromium salt. The note does not report a food matrix.
