Sepulveda et al. 2020 - Metals in Callista clams from the Gulf of California

This study measured trace metals in two wild populations of the squalid callista clam, Megapitaria squalida, from the southeastern Gulf of California. It is directly routeable for shellfish occurrence because the clam tissue values are reported by bay.

Key numbers

  • Altata Bay clam tissue contained Cd 2.49 ug/g dry weight in the abstract/discussion and 2.48 +/- 0.37 ug/g dry weight in Table I; Pb was 5.68 ug/g dry weight.
  • Agiabampo Bay clam tissue contained Cd 2.38 ug/g dry weight and Pb 5.54 ug/g dry weight.
  • The authors state that Cd and Pb in clams exceeded Mexican sanitary limits.
  • Sediment levels did not exceed the regulatory comparisons used by the authors, so the source’s routeable food occurrence evidence is the clam tissue result.

Methods

The paper sampled Megapitaria squalida clams monthly from April 2016 through April 2017 in Altata and Agiabampo Bays. The page captures the edible clam values rather than sediment context.

Implications

The source supports seasonal/geographic shellfish gap filling for Cd and Pb in Mexican wild clams. The dry-weight basis must be retained during evidence routing.

Verification notes

The DOI and PDF match the clam paper in the wishlist row. Sediment data are not routed as food occurrence data. Arsenic and mercury are treated as total-element measurements because inorganic arsenic and methylmercury speciation were not reported. The clam species is Megapitaria squalida; the frontmatter keeps the matrix broad enough for routing while the title and sample population retain the species.
