Elemental composition, rare earths and minority elements in organic and conventional wines from volcanic areas: The Canary Islands (Spain)

The study measured many elements in six red and eight white wines from the Canary Islands. Table 2 pools red and white and is not used. Table 4 has a white column. Table 3 islands where both bottles are white (La Palma, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, El Hierro) are used. Red islands are not used.

Key numbers

Table captions print ng/l or ng/ l. The discussion prints ng/ml for some of the same numerals. This note does not convert those units.

Table 4 white column means: total arsenic 1.12, cadmium 0.65, total mercury 0.10, lead 25.62, aluminum 987.72, total chromium 20.08, nickel 62.52, tin 0.69, in ng/l as the caption prints ng/ l.

Table 3 means of the two white bottles on each island, ng/l: La Palma arsenic 1.18, cadmium 0.57, mercury 0.17, lead 7.56, aluminum 859.96, chromium 11.47, nickel 10.67, tin 0.76. La Gomera arsenic 0.70, cadmium 0.34, mercury 0.19, lead 47.68, aluminum 990.08, chromium 19.89, nickel 106.05, tin 0.71. Fuerteventura arsenic 1.79, cadmium 0.41, mercury 0.01, lead 40.45, aluminum 1194.09, chromium 28.33, nickel 51.88, tin 0.65. El Hierro arsenic 0.83, cadmium 1.27, mercury 0.01, lead 6.79, aluminum 906.76, chromium 20.62, nickel 81.47, tin 0.65.

The discussion also prints single-bottle nickel figures in ng/ml: LG1 113.04, FT1 101.95, EH2 161.13, LG2 99.05. Fuerteventura chromium is printed as 28.37 ng/ml in prose and 28.33 ng/l in Table 3. Both are left as printed. Recoveries were 83% to 119%. Arsenic is 75As, not inorganic. Chromium is 52Cr, not hexavalent. Mercury is 202Hg, not methylmercury.

Methods (brief)

Bottled wine was microwave digested and measured by ICP-MS, 12 measurements per wine.

Evidence fitness

The white column and the white-only islands support a white-wine occurrence note if the ng/l and ng/ml captions are both kept. They do not support a converted unit or a red-wine value.

Limitations

Unit labels disagree inside the paper. Organic versus conventional means in Table 2 are not color-split.
