Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Fruit Juice Samples from Toubrk City, Libya

Overview

Moussa measured ten elements by flame AAS in eight commercial fruit juice brands bought in Tobruk, Libya. Lead was found in one juice; cadmium, cobalt, chromium and mercury were not detected in any, though no detection limits are given.

Key numbers

  • Lead 0.046 mg/L in one of eight juices, the other seven not detected (Table 1; Figure 1).
  • Cadmium and mercury not detected in all eight juices (Table 1).
  • Nickel 0.032 to 0.345 mg/L in five juices; iron up to 51.360 mg/L in one juice (Table 1).

Methods (brief)

Juices were filtered and read directly by flame AAS against standards. No digestion, detection limits, blanks or reference materials are described.

Evidence Fitness

Eight single samples with no QA or detection limits; flame AAS cannot support the mercury non-detects at drinking-water limits. Peer review is unverified. For sports-drink-bases this is a proxy: it measures finished fruit juices, not sports drink bases.
