Overview
Sunusi and colleagues bought 25 soft drink brands in Kazaure in April 2017 and measured seven metals by atomic absorption, plus organochlorine and organophosphate pesticide residues by gas chromatography. Lead was found in 40% of drinks at 0.01 to 0.05 mg/L, and cadmium in 36% at 0.003 to 0.02 mg/L.
Key numbers
- Lead: highest brand 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/L (SD10); average of 25 brands 0.006 mg/L (Table 3, p. 31).
- Cadmium: highest 0.02 mg/L (SD7, SD20); average 0.004 mg/L (Table 3, p. 31).
- Nickel: highest 0.49 ± 0.02 mg/L (SD9) (Table 3, p. 31).
Methods (brief)
Each 25 mL sample was digested with concentrated nitric acid on a hot plate, made up to 50 mL and analysed by AAS against a calibration plot. No detection limits, blanks, spikes or reference materials are reported.
Evidence Fitness
Twenty-five brands with one result each and no QA or LODs. The text conflicts with Table 3 on cadmium exceedances and the lowest copper value. The drink type for each brand code is not given, so the data are general soft drink evidence, a proxy for diet-cola and lemon-lime-soft-drink, which are not linked. Results are per litre.
