The Public Health Significance of Controlling Contaminants in Samples of Milk and Dairy Products in the Republic of Srpska in the Period 2010-2012

Overview

Petković and colleagues summarized official control testing of milk and dairy products in the Republic of Srpska from June 2010 to March 2012. Of 407 samples, 339 were tested for arsenic and lead, and all results were below the reporting limits; no sample was judged unsafe.

Key numbers

  • Arsenic, 339 samples: minimum < 0.02 mg/kg, maximum < 0.1 mg/kg (Table 1, p. 96).
  • Lead, 339 samples: < 0.05 mg/kg (Table 1, p. 96); the Discussion states < 0.02 mg/kg (p. 97).

Methods (brief)

Atomic absorption spectrometry: flame for lead and cadmium, hydride generation for arsenic, cold vapor for mercury. No LOD, reference material or recovery is reported, and no cadmium or mercury results are given.

Evidence Fitness

A large monitoring set, but results are pooled across all dairy subgroups and every value is censored, so it only shows that levels were below 0.02 to 0.1 mg/kg arsenic and 0.05 mg/kg lead. The pooled group includes milk pudding and dairy desserts but has no per-product values, so it is a proxy for custard and that page is not linked.
