Moreda-Pineiro et al. 2020 - Inorganic arsenic speciation in commercial rice

This Talanta method paper developed an ionic-imprinted-polymer extraction workflow for inorganic arsenic species in rice and applied it to commercial rice samples. It is routeable for rice occurrence context because the paper reports inorganic arsenic ranges and total arsenic checks in real rice matrices.

Key numbers

  • The application set included two white rice samples, Basmati and Jasmin, and one wild-rice sample described as a mixture of white and brown rice.
  • Table 4 lists commercial-sample inorganic arsenic values of 30 +/- 11 ug/kg in Jasmin rice, 93 +/- 17 ug/kg in wild rice, and 127 +/- 13 ug/kg in Basmati rice.
  • The narrative also states a wider commercial iAs range of 30 +/- 5 to 213 +/- 16 ug/kg; use the table rows for exact extraction because they are the source’s itemized values.
  • The authors state that As(III) concentrations were generally higher than As(V) in the three rice samples.
  • Basmati rice exceeded the 100 ug/kg inorganic arsenic level used for rice destined for infant and young-child foods in the authors’ comparison.
  • Wild rice was described as close to the FDA proposed action level of 100 ug/kg inorganic arsenic.
  • The ERM-BC211 rice reference material check found total As 252 +/- 2 ug/kg and iAs 120 +/- 5 ug/kg, from As(III) 107 +/- 5 ug/kg and As(V) 13 +/- 1 ug/kg.

Methods

The paper extracted arsenic species from rice using ultrasound-assisted extraction and vortex-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction, then measured As(III) and As(V) by HPLC-ICP-MS. Total arsenic was measured after microwave-assisted acid digestion by ICP-MS.

Implications

The source supports rice-bulk-grain evidence for inorganic arsenic in commercial rice, especially as method-confirmed context for white rice and mixed wild rice. It is a small method-application set, not a broad market survey.

Verification notes

The PDF has an internal mismatch between the narrative iAs range and the itemized Table 4 commercial-rice rows. The page records both, but treats Table 4 as the extraction authority for sample-level routing. Brand names were not transcribed.
