The chemical and microbiological safety of emerging alternative protein sources and derived analogues: A review

Overview

A systematic-style review from Wageningen Food Safety Research of chemical and microbiological hazards in emerging plant and aquatic protein sources and their analogues. It compiles metal levels reported by other studies, for example upper cadmium and lead levels in legumes, and compares them with EU maximum levels.

Key numbers

  • No primary data. Cited EU maximum levels: cadmium in legumes 0.020 mg/kg (p. 5); lead in legumes 0.10 mg/kg and pulses 0.20 mg/kg (p. 7).
  • The review reports that all reviewed legumes exceeded the cadmium maximum level at their upper values (Table 3, p. 8).

Methods (brief)

Literature search following EFSA systematic-review guidance across two databases, publication years 2000 onward.

Evidence Fitness

Context only: every concentration is a quote of another paper or an EFSA opinion, so the underlying primary studies would need their own ingest. Useful for framing non-soy protein sources and veggie-burger ingredients, but not occurrence data for any thin page.
