Investigating antimony leaching from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles: characterization with SEM-EDX and ICP-OES

Water SA paper on PET bottles over 200 days. Not identified as baby bottles.

Water SA paper on PET bottles over 200 days. Not identified as baby bottles. The abstract uses 0.844 µg/L both as a water-side figure and as a concentration in the PET material.

Key numbers

Water results 0.02 to 2.14 µg/L. Maximum 2.14 µg/L at 60 °C after 200 days, above a Japanese limit of 2.00 µg/L that the paper cites (PDF p.1 and p.3). The abstract also calls 0.844 µg/L a concentration in the PET material. That unit is not a weight percent and is not the 2.14 µg/L water result.

Methods (brief)

Leaching study. The Japanese limit is cited, not re-opened as a primary instrument here.

Evidence fitness

Supports the water range and the statement that the abstract’s PET-material unit does not match a weight percent. Does not support a baby-bottle result.

Limitations

The two uses of 0.844 µg/L are not reconciled.
