Allergens responsible for contact allergy in children from 2010 to 2024: a systematic review and meta-analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled pediatric patch-test series from 2010 to 2024.

This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled pediatric patch-test series from 2010 to 2024. Seventeen studies comprising 11 593 children were eligible. The allergen with the highest pooled prevalence was nickel at 11.9 percent (95 percent confidence interval 8.6 to 15.71 percent). The abstract prints 15.71, not a rounded 15.7. Cobalt was 6.6 percent (95 percent CI 4.2 to 9.5). The next allergens in that sentence are not metals: cocamidopropyl betaine 5.5 percent, bacitracin 5.2 percent, fragrance mix I 4.8 percent, and methylisothiazolinone 4.3 percent. Primary-study tables are not copied.

Key numbers

Nickel 11.9 percent (8.6 to 15.71). Cobalt 6.6 percent (4.2 to 9.5). Methylisothiazolinone 4.3 percent is a preservative prevalence, not a metal. A leather chromium(VI) limit of 3 ppm, if cited in the review, is a limit citation and is not a measurement pooled by this ingest.

Methods (brief)

Systematic review of published patch-test series in children. The numbers above are the review’s own pooled estimates from the abstract.

Evidence fitness

The pooled percentages support a pediatric contact-allergy summary. They do not add a product concentration.

Limitations

The confidence interval endpoint is printed as 15.71 and is kept that way. Chromium and gold pooled percentages were not in the abstract sentence that was verified, so they are omitted.
