Trace elements in Canadian field peas: a grain safety assurance perspective

Overview

The Canadian Grain Commission reported a baseline for trace elements in Canadian field pea seed. The journal article is closed. Unpaywall reported no open-access copy on 2026-11-03, the mounted library path was not present in this checkout, and no PDF was found under raw/. The PubMed abstract (PMID 19680975) is the text that was read.

Abstract figures, not a table extraction

The abstract states a mean total cadmium of 0.023 mg/kg. It states that mean arsenic and lead were below a method quantification limit of 0.050 mg/kg, and that mean total mercury was below a quantification level of 0.002 mg/kg. It states that the measured values were below the Codex maximum residue levels the authors cite for those elements, and that mean selenium was 0.331 mg/kg. Sample size, range, crop years and growing region inside Canada are not in the abstract, so they are not repeated here and these means are not occurrence rows.

What this cannot support

The measurements are whole field pea seed. They are not a protein isolate, a concentrate, or a retail powder. They do not show whether protein separation raises or lowers a metal relative to the seed. Selenium is an essential element in the abstract and is not treated here as a toxic-metal result.
