Toxicological Profile for Antimony and Compounds

The October 2019 profile states minimal risk levels for oral and inhalation exposure and adopts ICRP gastrointestinal absorption reference values.

The October 2019 profile states minimal risk levels for oral and inhalation exposure and adopts ICRP gastrointestinal absorption reference values. It does not print a percent absorption for intact infant skin.

Key numbers

Table 1-1 (PDF p.21): acute oral MRL 1 mg Sb/kg/day from a NOAEL of 99 mg Sb/kg/day and an uncertainty factor of 100; intermediate oral MRL 0.0006 mg Sb/kg/day, with the table printing a NOAEL of 0.064 mg Sb/kg/day; acute and intermediate inhalation 0.001 mg Sb/m3; chronic inhalation 0.0003 mg Sb/m3. A footnote on PDF p.58 prints the intermediate oral NOAEL as 0.06 mg Sb/kg/day. No chronic oral MRL. ICRP 1981 reference values cited in the profile: 10 percent gastrointestinal absorption for tartrate and 1 percent for other forms. Animal tartrate and trichloride estimates are described as about 2 to 7 percent.

Methods (brief)

Agency toxicological profile and MRL worksheets. The profile states that EPA had not classified the carcinogenicity of antimony as of this edition.

Evidence fitness

Supports the MRLs and the ICRP absorption values as reference figures. Does not support a chronic oral MRL, an IRIS reference dose, or a dermal fraction for a wipe.

Limitations

Table 1-1 and the later footnote do not print the same intermediate NOAEL. The metal page uses 0.06 mg Sb/kg/day and records 0.064 as the table cell.
