Screen-printed carbon electrode array illustrating gold nanoparticle multipurpose biosensing platform research context.

Optimized design of a nanostructured SPCE-based multipurpose biosensing platform formed by ferrocene-tethered electrochemically-deposited cauliflower-shaped gold nanoparticles

Overview

Argoubi and colleagues optimized a biosensing platform built on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) modified with electrochemically deposited cauliflower-shaped gold nanoparticles (cfAuNPs) tethered with ferrocene. The platform was validated for two analyte classes: human IgG immunosensing and H2O2 enzymatic sensing in honey. Gold provides the electrode nanostructure surface; neither gold nor H2O2 nor IgG are heavy metal food contaminants. H2O2 is used as a food preservative and antimicrobial in honey and dairy products; detection at sub-µM levels in honey using disposable electrodes demonstrates the food quality control applicability of AuNP-based biosensors.

Key numbers

IgG LOD: 0.11 ng/mL. IgG range: 0.11 to 50 ng/mL. H2O2 LOD in honey: 0.66 µM. H2O2 range: 0.7 to 70 µM. LOD formula used: 3 sigma_b/S; LOQ: 10 sigma_b/S.

Implications for the wiki

This paper contributes to Gold as documentation of a generalizable AuNP electrode platform architecture applicable to multiple food safety analytes, including H2O2 quality control in honey. No food occurrence data for gold or any heavy metal are provided.
