Overview
This study measured uranium isotopes and radon by CR-39 track detectors and cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc and iron by flame AAS in eight adult nutritional supplements sold in Iraqi pharmacies. Per-sample metal values are shown only in a figure; the text gives study-wide means.
Key numbers
- Mean cadmium 0.307 ± 0.020 ppm, chromium 0.028 ± 0.005 ppm, copper 0.714 ± 0.048 ppm, zinc 2.714 ± 0.188 ppm, iron 0.145 ± 0.035 ppm (Section 3.3; Abstract).
- Permissible limits cited: cadmium 0.3, chromium 0.5, copper 2, zinc 15, iron 15 ppm (Discussion).
Methods (brief)
Samples were ground and sieved; metals were measured by flame AAS (novAA) at wavelengths given as 350 to 400 nm. Digestion, detection limits and quality control are not described.
Evidence Fitness
Weak metal data: means only, no QA, an undefined ppm basis for products described as liquids, implausibly low iron for a set containing iron supplements, and stated wavelengths that do not match the usual lines. Lead, arsenic and mercury were not measured. These are a proxy for meal-replacement-drink, which is not linked.
