Codex CXS 193-1995 - Tin Maximum Levels For Canned Foods
Codex CXS 193-1995, the General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed, sets international maximum levels for total tin in canned foods. The tin rows are relevant to HMI whenever a source page reports canned-food Sn migration or compares canned-food results against Codex.
Selected Limits
| Commodity / product | Maximum level | Unit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canned foods other than beverages | 250 | mg/kg | The ML does not apply to non-tinplate canned cooked cured chopped meat, cooked cured ham, cooked cured pork shoulder, corned beef, and luncheon meat. |
| Canned beverages | 150 | mg/kg | Relevant Codex commodity standards include CXS 247-2005. |
| Cooked cured chopped meat in containers other than tinplate containers | 50 | mg/kg | Product-specific exception row. |
| Cooked cured ham in containers other than tinplate containers | 50 | mg/kg | Product-specific exception row. |
| Cooked cured pork shoulder in containers other than tinplate containers | 50 | mg/kg | Product-specific exception row. |
| Corned beef in containers other than tinplate containers | 50 | mg/kg | Product-specific exception row. |
| Luncheon meat in containers other than tinplate containers | 50 | mg/kg | Product-specific exception row. |
How This Page Interacts With HMT&C
This is an external Codex comparator, not an HMT&C certification threshold. It is most useful for canned-food pages where the underlying source reports total Sn in mg/kg and where can lining, tinplate exposure, corrosion, storage time, or product acidity can explain variance.

Verification Notes
- Created 2026-05-18 during the Mititelu et al. 2025 ingest after checking the current FAO-hosted Codex CXS 193 PDF.
- The standard was adopted in 1995 and amended repeatedly. The effective_date field uses 1995-01-01 as a year-level placeholder for the adopted standard; legal users should check the current Codex PDF before relying on a live compliance value.
