Antimony, chemical fact sheet, Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality

The chemical fact sheet, assessment date 2003, is the short public statement of the drinking-water guideline.

The chemical fact sheet, assessment date 2003, is the short public statement of the drinking-water guideline. Its occurrence box does not match the background document’s groundwater sentence. Both documents were opened.

Key numbers

Guideline value 0.02 mg/L (20 µg/L). Occurrence box: groundwater less than 0.001 µg/L; surface water less than 0.2 µg/L; drinking water appearing to be less than 5 µg/L. TDI 6 µg/kg body weight from a NOAEL of 6.0 mg/kg body weight per day, uncertainty factor 1000. Allocation 10 percent of TDI, 60 kg adult, 2 litres/day. Conventional treatment does not remove antimony. The fact sheet still cites IARC Group 2B for antimony trioxide and Group 3 for antimony trisulfide, and states that oral carcinogenicity is not indicated by the data then in hand.

Methods (brief)

Fact sheet retrieved 2026-09-25 from the WHO wash-chemicals URL. It is two pages and points to the 2003 background document as the principal reference.

Evidence fitness

Supports the fact-sheet box as printed. Does not support treating less than 0.001 µg/L as the background document’s groundwater figure. That document prints 0.1 to 0.2 µg/L for groundwater and surface water together.

Limitations

The fact sheet is a summary. Where it and the background document disagree, both sentences are kept.
