Overview
Solidum measured cadmium and chromium by flame AAS in ten canned meat and ten canned fish products from Metro Manila supermarkets. All products were below the cited 0.05 ppm cadmium limit. Two canned fish products had chromium above 2 ppm.
Key numbers
- Canned fish cadmium 0.0085 to 0.0179 ppm (Table 1).
- Canned meat cadmium 0.0063 to 0.0198 ppm (Table 2, CM10 and CM8).
- Canned fish chromium up to 6.2721 ppm (CF8) and 2.2837 ppm (CF2); canned meat chromium 0.0032 to 0.0147 ppm (Tables 1-2).
Methods (brief)
Five grams of each product were digested in nitric acid at room temperature overnight, then heated at 80 °C, and read by flame AAS. No detection limits, reference materials or recoveries are reported, and the number of replicates is not stated. Lead standards were prepared but no lead results appear.
Evidence Fitness
One unit per product, coded only (CF1 to CF10, CM1 to CM10), with no meat type or fish species given. The cadmium levels are near the practical limit of flame AAS, and no LOD is stated. Only cadmium is a priority metal. Unspecified canned meat is a proxy for pork-and-beans-canned, pork-chop and refried-beans, so those pages are not linked.
