Overview
Sani and colleagues digested five powdered flavor drink products bought at a Nigerian market and measured cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury and six other elements by flame AAS. Table 2 prints one value per product and element in mg/L of the digest solution (1 g of powder in 50 mL), so the numbers are not concentrations in the powder or in the made-up drink.
Key numbers
- Lead 0.048 to 0.199 mg/L of digest across five products (Table 2).
- Cadmium 0.075 to 0.260 mg/L; arsenic 0.221 to 1.185 mg/L; mercury 0.132 to 0.487 mg/L (Table 2).
- The text and abstract print lead and cadmium ranges that do not match Table 2 (abstract swaps them).
Methods (brief)
Wet digestion with nitric, hydrochloric and perchloric acids (1:1:1), dilution to 50 mL, flame AAS. A distilled-water blank was run. No detection limits, reference materials, recoveries or replicate counts are reported.
Evidence Fitness
Five products, one measurement each, digest-solution units, no QA beyond a blank, and mercury values from flame AAS without a cold-vapour step. Internal range errors between abstract, text and table. This is a proxy for sports-drink-bases: it measures powdered flavor drink mixes, not sports drink bases. Use only as weak, qualitative context.
