Bioactive, nutritional composition, heavy metal and pesticide residue of four Chinese jujube cultivars

Overview

Rahman and colleagues analysed the composition, bioactive compounds, amino acids, heavy metals and pesticide residues of four jujube cultivars grown in northwest China and supplied from Minqin county, Gansu. Lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and chromium were measured by graphite furnace methods following Chinese national standards. No pesticide residues were detected.

Key numbers

  • Lead: not detected in Hupingzao and Huizao; 0.0566 mg/kg (Xiaozao) and 0.0990 mg/kg (Junzao) fresh weight (Table 5).
  • Arsenic: 0.0103 to 0.100 mg/kg fresh weight; highest in Xiaozao (Table 5).
  • Cadmium: 0.0139 (Hupingzao) and 0.0127 mg/kg (Junzao), not detected in the other two (Table 5).

Methods (brief)

Pitted fruit, stored at -20 C, analysed in triplicate by graphite furnace methods per Chinese national standards. No detection limits, reference materials or recoveries are reported for the metals.

Evidence Fitness

Direct evidence for jujube fruit, but thin: one value per cultivar from one county, sample numbers not stated, and no metal QA reported. Results are on a fresh-weight basis. Arsenic is total arsenic.
