Evaluation of antioxidant activity, anti-lipid peroxidation effect and elemental impurity risk of some wild Agaricus species mushrooms

Overview

Three wild Agaricus species collected in Çanakkale were air-dried and tested for antioxidant activity and for cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury by ICP-MS, with hazard and cancer risk estimates. All three exceeded the 0.20 mg/kg cadmium value the authors cite, and A. bresadolanus had very high arsenic.

Key numbers

  • Agaricus bresadolanus: cadmium 7521.61 ± 2.84 µg/kg, arsenic 15201.26 ± 2.34 µg/kg (Table 5, p. 6).
  • Agaricus bernardii: cadmium 1972.38, lead 2008.09, arsenic 3092.53, mercury 250.09 µg/kg (Table 5).
  • Agaricus cupreobrunneus: lead 2377.37, mercury 576.53 µg/kg (Table 5).

Methods (brief)

Dried, milled fruit bodies (0.3 g) digested with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide in a microwave system and analyzed by ICP-MS following USP <232>/<233>. Detection limits 0.01 to 0.03 µg/kg; triplicate analyses. No reference material or recovery is reported. Dry basis is implied but not labeled.

Evidence Fitness

One collection per species, so the tiny SDs reflect analytical replicates only. The discussion places the collection near Bingöl, contradicting the Methods, and A. bresadolanus is generally considered toxic. Wild Agaricus is a proxy for the cultivated mushrooms in cream-of-mushroom-soup; that thin page is not linked.
