Twelve commercial disposable wet wipes bought in the United Kingdom were dried and examined for fibre type and organic additives. Flushable and biodegradable wipes were cellulose-based. Conventional wipes also contained polypropylene or polyester. The study does not measure heavy metals. No elemental or metal concentration from the authors’ own assays is present to ledger.
Key numbers
This source does not report a heavy-metal concentration, a metal release value, or a metal limit of its own.
Methods (brief)
New wipes were air-dried overnight. About 90 to 100 micrograms were used for pyrolysis. Evolved-gas profiles showed a cellulose pyrolysis maximum around 340 degrees C. Scanning electron microscopy described natural fibres as about 40 to 50 micrometres in diameter. Additives were identified by marker ions, not by quantified concentrations.
Evidence fitness
Polymer and organic-additive identification in 12 commercial wet wipes: flushable and biodegradable samples were cellulose-based, and conventional samples also contained polypropylene and/or poly(ethylene terephthalate). It supports the presence of named organic additives such as benzoic acid or sodium benzoate, 2-phenoxyethanol, and glycerine where those pyrolysis markers were detected.
It does not measure lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, antimony, or any other heavy metal, and it does not report elemental weight percentages from the wipes. Packaging percentages such as 100 percent plant-based fibres or 70 percent natural fibres and 30 percent plastic are label text, not analytical results.
Limitations
Drying can remove volatile ingredients, and several label ingredients were not detected. Additive findings are qualitative. Fibre percentages on packages were not verified as mass fractions by the authors. Samples are coded, so brand-level results are not available. A coauthor is identified as an editor of the journal.
