Macro, Trace and Toxic Element Composition in Liver and Meat of Broiler Chicken Associated with Cecal Microbiome Community

Overview

Deryabin and colleagues pooled group-level element data from nine of their broiler feeding experiments (36 groups) and related 25 elements in liver, thigh and breast to the cecal microbiome. Table 1 gives median and quartile concentrations for all groups, and Table 4 splits them by two microbiome patterns.

Key numbers

  • Lead median [Q1 to Q3]: liver 0.02 [0.01 to 0.03], thigh 0.02 [0.01 to 0.02], breast 0.02 [0.01 to 0.03] ppm (Table 1, p. 6).
  • Cadmium: liver 0.03 [0.02 to 0.19] ppm; thigh 0.00 [0.00 to 0.00] ppm (Table 1).
  • Arsenic 0.00 to 0.01 ppm and mercury 0.00 to 0.01 ppm medians in all tissues (Table 1).

Methods (brief)

1 g tissue microwave digested in HNO3; elements by ICP-MS (NexION 300D) or ICP-AES (Optima 2000 DV), calibrated with manufacturer standards. No LOD, reference material or recovery reported. Group means were the analysis units; nonparametric statistics.

Evidence Fitness

Experimental birds, not retail chicken; the diets carried microbiome-active additives but no added elements. Values are pooled re-analyses of the authors’ own earlier experiments, and per-group data are not printed; findings would overlap any later ingest of those experiments. Many values round to 0.00 ppm and no LOD is given. Chicken meat is a proxy for the chicken-broth page, which is not linked. Thigh and breast muscle descriptions in the methods appear swapped.
