Migration of antimony from polyethylene terephthalate used in mineral water bottles

Mineral water in PET bottles, not identified as baby bottles. Migration depended on temperature. Key numbers No migration at 4 °C and 20 °C.

Mineral water in PET bottles, not identified as baby bottles. Migration depended on temperature.

Key numbers

No migration at 4 °C and 20 °C. An increase at 40 °C stayed under the EU limit of 5.0 µg/L that the paper cites. At 60 °C after 30 days, migration exceeded that limit, and both Sb(V) and Sb(III) were detected. A short-term test printed day-0 totals of 0.3 to 0.7 µg/L and 2.6 to 4.2 µg/L after storage at 60 °C (PDF p.14).

Methods (brief)

Storage experiment with speciation. Not a baby-bottle study.

Evidence fitness

Supports migration into mineral water under the conditions tested. Does not support a baby-bottle concentration.

Limitations

The EU 5.0 µg/L figure is the limit the paper cites for that comparison.
