Overview
Aioanei and Pop compared lead, cadmium, copper and zinc in wheat bran from one conventional and one organic production system in North-East Romania over two years, using AAS after dry ashing. Results are means on a dry-matter basis with n=5 per group per year. The paper follows animal-feed sampling standards and compares results with an EU feed limit.
Key numbers
- Cadmium: conventional 0.007 mg/kg DM in both 2011 and 2012; organic 0.005 (2011) and 0.006 (2012) mg/kg DM (Tab. 1, p. 184).
- Lead: rows labelled “Org.” 0.04 (2011) and 0.06 (2012) mg/kg DM; rows labelled “Eco.” 0.02 and 0.04 mg/kg DM (Tab. 1). The table has no “Conv.” lead row although the text says lead was higher in conventional bran.
- Feed maximum limits cited: lead 30 mg/kg, cadmium 1 mg/kg (Regulation (EU) No 574/2011).
Methods (brief)
AAS after dry ashing (SR EN ISO 14082:2003); sampling and preparation per feed standards SR EN ISO 6497 and 6498. One-way ANOVA and point biserial correlation in SPSS. No LOD, certified reference material or recovery is reported.
Evidence Fitness
Small two-site comparison (20 samples in total) with means and standard errors only. The lead row labels conflict with the text, so which system had higher lead cannot be confirmed; values are used as printed. The bran appears to be feed-grade material. Wheat bran is a proxy for wheat flour and for the wheat-cereal-biscuits page, which is not linked. No DOI is printed in the PDF; peer review is unverified (the journal states double-blind review, but no record for this article was seen).
