JECFA inorganic arsenic BMDL

Stub. Pending dedicated ingest of the JECFA BMDL₀.₅ derivation for inorganic arsenic, which is the operative reference value JECFA retained after withdrawing the PTWI of 15 µg/kg b.w./week in 2010 (72nd meeting) (JECFA 82nd). The BMDL framework expresses the lower 95% confidence limit on the dose corresponding to a 0.5 percent increased incidence of lung cancer in epidemiological data.

The page should populate with:

  • Numerical BMDL₀.₅ value (range typically reported as 2 to 7 µg/kg b.w./day depending on the underlying epidemiological dataset).
  • The 2010 withdrawal of the iAs PTWI and the rationale: dietary exposures in many populations are at or above the BMDL, leaving no margin to support a “tolerable” framing.
  • Use by national regulators (FDA Closer to Zero, EFSA contaminant assessments) as the de-facto health-based reference value for iAs.

See arsenic for the cross-source iAs synthesis and JECFA 82nd for the 82nd-meeting context that referenced this BMDL framework.
