Colorimetric tubes illustrating d-penicillamine gold nanoparticle dual-analyte sensor research context.

A dual colorimetric probe for rapid environmental monitoring of mercury (Hg)(2+) and arsenic (As)(3+) using gold nanoparticles functionalized with d-penicillamine

Overview

Yoon and colleagues developed d-penicillamine-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a dual colorimetric probe for the simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and As3+ in water. The two analytes trigger distinct aggregation mechanisms: Hg2+ coordinates with d-penicillamine via soft-metal thiol interaction, while As3+ forms a different binding geometry, producing distinguishable color responses. Gold is the analytical probe; mercury and arsenic are the target analytes. Validated in spiked drinking water.

Key numbers

LOD Hg2+: 0.5 nM (approximately 0.1 ppb). LOD As3+: 0.7 nM (approximately 0.05 ppb). Recoveries in water: Hg2+ 95.4 to 103.5%; As3+ 96.8 to 104.1%.

Implications for the wiki

This paper contributes to Gold as documentation of AuNP colorimetric platforms for simultaneous dual heavy metal detection in water. It also provides analytical method context for Mercury, Total and Arsenic, Total. No food occurrence data for gold, mercury, or arsenic are provided as natural concentrations.
