Biochars from rapeseed straw, corn straw, rice husk and cotton stalk were modified with lanthanum oxide and tested for capturing ammonium from wastewater for reuse in agriculture. The modified biochars adsorbed 43 to 48 mg/g ammonium and were selective over chloride.
Key numbers
- Maximum monolayer ammonium adsorption 43.32 to 47.93 mg/g across the four biochars (abstract).
Methods (brief)
Sol-gel modification and pyrolysis at 500 degrees C; adsorption isotherms, selectivity and agricultural applicability tests.
Evidence fitness
Off-topic for dietary exposure. The authors propose applying the spent material to farmland, which could add lanthanum to soil, but no soil or crop lanthanum was measured; it does not support dietary exposure or toxicity claims.
Limitations
Laboratory material or biomedical study; no environmental, food or human exposure measurements.
