Overview
Surya and colleagues developed an electrochemical sensor for ciprofloxacin using a chitosan-gold nanoparticle molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) composite on a glassy carbon electrode. Gold nanoparticles enhance electrode conductivity and amplify the electrochemical signal; ciprofloxacin is the target analyte. The sensor was validated in spiked milk, tap water, and mineral water. Ciprofloxacin is a critically important fluoroquinolone antibiotic; residues in milk and water contribute to antimicrobial resistance selection. The EU MRL for ciprofloxacin in bovine milk (100 µg/kg, approximately 0.3 µmol/L) is below this sensor’s LOD of 0.21 µmol/L without matrix pre-concentration.
Key numbers
LOD: 210 nmol/L (0.21 µmol/L). Linear range: 1 to 100 µmol/L. Validated in spiked milk, tap water, and mineral water.
Implications for the wiki
This paper contributes to Gold as documentation of AuNP-based sensing platforms for antibiotic residue screening in food and water. No food occurrence data for gold or any heavy metal are provided.
