Effects of lanthanum and acid rain stress on the bio-sequestration of lanthanum in phytoliths in germinated rice seeds

Germinating rice seeds were exposed to lanthanum chloride under simulated acid rain at different pH values to examine how much lanthanum is captured in phytoliths, the silica bodies plants form. Lanthanum raised phytolith lanthanum sequestration, a pH of 4.5 favored it and a pH of 3.5 reduced it.

Key numbers

  • Lanthanum chloride treatments 0, 20, 100 and 300 mg/L at three pH values in an orthogonal design (Methods).
  • Phytolith lanthanum results are shown in figures only.

Methods (brief)

Orthogonal experiments on germinated seeds; phytolith extraction and lanthanum quantification; correlation analysis with seed physiology.

Evidence fitness

Mechanistic plant evidence on where lanthanum binds in rice tissue. It does not measure lanthanum in mature grain and does not support dietary statements.

Limitations

Germinating seeds only; values only in figures.
