Fine-Tuning Porous Structure of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Separation and Purification of Astaxanthin by Defect Engineering

This study tuned the pores of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks to adsorb and purify astaxanthin, a carotenoid extracted from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. The best material adsorbed 26.21 mg/g of astaxanthin. Zirconium carryover into the purified product was not reported.

Key numbers

  • Astaxanthin adsorption capacity 26.21 mg/g on the best material; extraction efficiency 89.0% ± 2.3% (Abstract).
  • This paper reports no numerical findings relevant to zirconium exposure.

Methods (brief)

Modulator-induced defect engineering of UiO-67 frameworks, adsorption and selectivity tests, spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations and fixed-bed column separation.

Evidence fitness

Off-topic for dietary exposure. The paper uses zirconium frameworks as adsorbents for carotenoid purification; it does not support dietary exposure or toxicity claims for zirconium. Zirconium residues in the purified astaxanthin were not measured.

Limitations

No zirconium was measured in food, water, soil or human samples, so nothing in the paper describes exposure.
