The reduction of vertical food impact using adjacent surface retaining zirconium crowns preparation technique: a 1-year follow-up prospective clinical study

This Chengdu clinical study compared partial zirconium crowns that preserve adjacent tooth contacts with traditional full crowns. After one year, food impaction occurred on 2.08% of surfaces in the partial-crown group versus 15.62% in the control group. Food impaction here means food trapped between teeth, not a dietary contaminant.

Key numbers

  • Food impaction incidence 2.08% (1 of 48 surfaces) with partial crowns versus 15.62% in the control group; no secondary caries on 80 adjacent surfaces (Abstract).
  • This paper reports no numerical findings relevant to zirconium exposure.

Methods (brief)

Prospective comparison of two crown preparation methods with 12-month clinical follow-up and chi-square testing.

Evidence fitness

Off-topic for dietary exposure. The paper uses zirconium dental crowns as a restorative material; it does not support dietary exposure or toxicity claims for zirconium.

Limitations

Small single-center study; zirconium release from crowns was not measured.
