Visual and Colorimetric Sensing of Metsulfuron-Methyl by Exploiting Hydrogen Bond-Induced Anti-Aggregation of Gold Nanoparticles in the Presence of Melamine

Overview

Liu and colleagues developed a citrate-capped AuNP colorimetric anti-aggregation assay for the detection of metsulfuron-methyl, a widely used sulfonylurea herbicide. In the presence of melamine, metsulfuron-methyl prevents NaCl-induced AuNP aggregation through hydrogen bonding, maintaining the red color. Gold is the analytical probe; metsulfuron-methyl is the target analyte. Validated matrices are agricultural irrigation water, tap water, and well water.

Key numbers

LOD: 0.05 mg/L. Linear range: 0.1 to 100 mg/L. R2: 0.999. Validated in spiked agricultural irrigation water, tap water, and well water. Best sensitivity at pH above 3.5.

Implications for the wiki

This paper contributes to Gold as documentation of AuNP colorimetric platforms applied to pesticide/herbicide residue monitoring in agricultural water. No food occurrence data for gold or any heavy metal are provided.
