Lanthanum regulates the reactive oxygen species in the roots of rice seedlings

Rice seedlings were exposed to lanthanum at 0.05 to 1.5 mM. Higher concentrations (0.5 mM and above) raised hydrogen peroxide, superoxide and lipid peroxidation in roots, while low concentrations raised catalase and peroxidase activity, consistent with a low-dose stimulation and high-dose stress pattern.

Key numbers

  • Lanthanum treatments 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM (abstract).
  • Hydrogen peroxide, superoxide and malondialdehyde increased at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM (abstract).

Methods (brief)

Hydroponic seedling exposures with biochemical assays of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzymes in roots.

Evidence fitness

Mechanistic plant evidence on lanthanum stress. It does not support food or human exposure statements.

Limitations

Root tissue only; solution concentrations far above typical environmental levels; no tissue lanthanum reported.
