Glucomannan Accumulation Induced by Exogenous Lanthanum in Amorphophallus konjac: Insights from a Comparative Transcriptome Analysis

Konjac plants were treated with lanthanum chloride during early corm expansion, and corm glucomannan content and gene expression were analyzed. Lanthanum at 20 to 80 mg/L increased glucomannan, and transcriptome analysis identified carbohydrate and hormone-related genes linked to the effect. Lanthanum in the corms, the edible part, was not measured.

Key numbers

  • Lanthanum at 20 to 80 mg/L significantly increased konjac glucomannan compared with controls (abstract).
  • 21,047 differentially expressed genes were identified (abstract).

Methods (brief)

Single lanthanum chloride treatment, corm sampling at 7, 14 and 60 days, RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR validation with three biological replicates.

Evidence fitness

Supports statements that lanthanum is explored as a yield or quality input for a food crop. It does not quantify lanthanum residues in konjac.

Limitations

No lanthanum residue data; mechanism inferred from expression correlations.
