Lateral flow test strip illustrating gold nanoparticle immunochromatographic sensor research context.

A Rapid and Semi-Quantitative Gold Nanoparticles Based Strip Sensor for Polymyxin B Sulfate Residues

Overview

Li and colleagues developed a competitive immunochromatographic lateral flow test strip using gold nanoparticle-labeled monoclonal antibodies for the detection of polymyxin B (PMB) residues in milk and animal feed. Gold nanoparticles are the signal label; polymyxin B is the target analyte. PMB is a last-resort lipopeptide antibiotic with no established maximum residue limit (MRL) in food-producing animals in major jurisdictions, used as a feed additive in some countries. This rapid strip test enables on-site residue screening in 15 minutes without laboratory equipment.

Key numbers

Visual LOD in milk: 25 ng/mL. Cutoff limit in milk: 100 ng/mL. Visual LOD in animal feed: 500 µg/kg. Cutoff limit in feed: 1000 µg/kg. Test time: 15 minutes.

Implications for the wiki

This paper contributes to Gold as documentation of AuNP lateral flow strip technology applied to veterinary drug residue screening in food. No food occurrence data for gold or any heavy metal are provided.
