This study screened 171 field pea genotypes for boron tolerance in pots of soil spiked with boric acid and tested whether a marker linked to powdery mildew resistance also predicts boron tolerance. The marker predicted both responses with over 80% accuracy, supporting breeding of peas for high-boron soils.
Key numbers
- This paper reports no numerical findings relevant to boron exposure. Screening pots were spiked with 10 mg/kg boron as boric acid (Methods, Boron Screening).
Methods (brief)
Seedlings of each genotype were grown in sandy loam pre-mixed with 10 mg/kg boron as boric acid and scored for leaf symptoms on a 1 to 6 scale; genotypes were genotyped with candidate markers.
Evidence fitness
Supports crop breeding for boron tolerance on high-boron soils. It does not support food boron concentrations, dietary exposure or toxicity claims.
Limitations
No tissue boron measured. Funded by a Victorian state department and the Grains Research and Development Corporation; no conflicts declared.
