Bee Pollen - Nutritional and Toxicological Aspects

Overview

This review summarizes the composition of bee pollen and the heavy metals reported in it by earlier studies, mainly from Slovakia, Poland and Romania. All metal values are quoted from other papers, including work by the first author’s group, so the source is context only.

Key numbers

  • Quoted ranges from Bogdanov (2005): lead in pollen 0,02 - 3,90 mg/kg; cadmium in pollen 0.05 - 2.30 mg/kg (Section 5, p. 43).
  • Quoted Kačániová et al. (2008a, 2010) values: bee pollen cadmium 0.22 to 0.26 mg/kg, mercury 0.004 to 0.005 mg/kg, lead below 0.1 mg/kg (Table 3).
  • Quoted Chlebo and Čermáková (2001) pollen limits: cadmium 0.100, mercury 0.050, lead 1.000, arsenic 1.000, chromium 0.500 mg/kg (Table 5).

Methods (brief)
