Determination of Some Heavy Metal Levels in Soft Drinks from Turkey Using ICP-OES Method

Overview

Bingöl and colleagues measured arsenic, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead by ICP-OES in 104 canned carbonated soft drinks of ten trademarks collected across ten Turkish regions. All trademark means were within the Turkish Food Codex limits for soft drinks. Results are reported as means with standard errors per trademark.

Key numbers

  • All 104 drinks: lead 0.029 ± 0.002, cadmium 0.005 ± 0.0003, arsenic 0.037 ± 0.002 mg/kg (mean ± SE, Table 1).
  • Trademark means for lead: 0.023 to 0.035 mg/kg (Table 1).
  • Lead range across samples: 0.004 to 0.091 mg/kg (Results text).

Methods (brief)

Drinks were degassed for 24 hours, digested by microwave with nitric acid and analyzed by ICP-OES. Detection limits were 9.5 (arsenic), 0.32 (cadmium) and 0.75 (lead) µg/l. Only repeatability is reported; no reference material or recovery is given.

Evidence Fitness

A reasonably large national sample of finished canned soft drinks, but QA is thin, the collection period is not printed, and the arsenic and cadmium minima fall below the stated detection limits. Flavor types are not reported, so for diet-cola, lemon-lime-soft-drink, soft-drink-bases, sports-drink-bases and flavored-carbonated-bottled-waters this is a generic finished soft drink proxy and those pages are not linked.
