This materials paper added boric acid, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate and sodium pentaborate to gelatin films intended as biodegradable antimicrobial food packaging. The films inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans on agar, and 10% or 15% disodium octaborate (g/g gelatin) was proposed as most promising. Boron migration into food was not measured.
Key numbers
- This paper reports no numerical findings relevant to boron exposure.
Methods (brief)
Solvent-cast gelatin films with boron derivatives; disc-type antimicrobial tests, mechanical, rheological, FT-IR and morphology analyses.
Evidence fitness
Boron appears here only as a component of an engineered material. The paper does not support dietary exposure or toxicity claims for boron.
Limitations
Off-topic for boron exposure; no boron measurements in food, water or people. Boron compounds were provided by the National Boron Research Institute (BOREN) and the state borate producer Eti Maden; no funding statement is printed.
