Overview
Akinola and colleagues analyzed proximate composition and minerals in suya spice, a peanut and pepper seasoning blend, from five vendors in Agege and one branded control from Ikeja, Lagos. Lead was the only toxic metal measured and was below 0.1 ppm in all six samples. Other minerals are shown only as bar charts.
Key numbers
- Lead in all six suya spice samples, including the Ikeja control: “<0.1” ppm (Table 2, p. 52).
- No other toxic metal was measured; iron and copper appear only in Figures 2 and 6.
Methods (brief)
Samples were dry ashed and acid digested following AOAC (2010) and read by flame AAS (Shimadzu AA-7000), in triplicate. No detection limit, reference material or recovery is reported, and the PDF does not print a DOI.
Evidence Fitness
Six samples, one per vendor, with lead reported only as a censored value at a 0.1 ppm reporting threshold, so the study cannot distinguish low lead levels. No quality-control data. Suya spice is a seasoning proxy for brown-gravy; no gravy was measured, and that page is not linked.
