EFSA — Aluminium Tolerable Weekly Intake (1 mg/kg b.w./week)
The EFSA AFC Panel established a tolerable weekly intake for aluminium of 1 mg Al/kg body weight per week in its May 2008 Scientific Opinion on the Safety of Aluminium from Dietary Intake, replacing the prior JECFA provisional tolerable weekly intake of 7 mg/kg b.w./week (a sevenfold reduction) (EFSA 2008). The TWI is anchored on neurotoxic, reproductive, and developmental effects in animal studies (EFSA 2008). The Panel concluded the TWI is likely to be exceeded in a significant part of the European population, particularly among consumers of foods containing aluminium-based food additives, infants on certain formulae, and adults consuming antacids (EFSA 2008).
JECFA subsequently aligned its PTWI to 1 mg/kg b.w./week (EFSA 2008).
| Parameter | Value |

| Prior JECFA PTWI (replaced) | 7 mg Al/kg b.w./week |
| Critical endpoints | Neurotoxicity, reproductive and developmental effects |
