Overview

RDC 722/2022 is Brazil’s framework resolution for maximum tolerated limits of contaminants in foods. It defines the legal concept of LMT, sets scope and basis rules, and points to IN 160/2022 for contaminant-by-food numeric limits.

Scope

The resolution applies to the whole food production chain. It excludes drinking water, bottled water, food-additive contaminants, supplement constituents, bacterial toxins, food-contact-material migration, and extraneous matter when those are governed by separate regulations.

Exact limit and units

The PDF does not contain the numeric LMT tables. Art. 6 states that contaminant LMTs are defined in IN 160/2022. This page should not be used as a numeric limit table until IN 160/2022 is separately ingested.

How tested

Art. 10 requires methods used for LMT verification to meet Codex Alimentarius procedural-manual performance criteria. For inorganic arsenic, total arsenic methods may be used first; if results exceed the corresponding LMT, inorganic arsenic testing is required.

Enforcement posture

Art. 9 prohibits food that fails the applicable contaminant LMTs from being used for direct human consumption or as ingredients in food for human consumption. Art. 11 treats noncompliance as a sanitary infraction under Law 6.437/1977.
